You will be impressed with Tarangire National Park. Most visitors love the distinct shapes of the baobab trees silhouetted against the sky, making this place feel like a fairy-tale African landscape. Or visitors remember the elephants that roam in family bands everywhere throughout the park. If you’re lucky, you’ll also encounter the big cats – lions especially, cheetahs and leopards – that are always possible here. Welcome to the Unesco World Heritage-listed Serengeti, one of Africa’s top safari destinations. While you’re here. There’s an excellent chance that you’ll see leopards along the dry riverbanks, cheetahs out on the grasslands, and elephants, giraffes, and all kinds of antelopes everywhere across the park. Watch also for the Serengeti’s famous lion prides. And that’s just the start. Some of the planet’s largest and most diverse wildlife populations roam the Serengeti, not to mention millions of wildebeest and zebras, which migrate across the plains yearly.

The wildebeest typically give birth to their calves in February; by June, the herds start to move north in search of greener pastures. They cross the Mara River into Kenya in July or August, staying until October or November before returning south to Tanzania. The migration is difficult for the animals, as they must navigate through predators such as lions, hyenas, and crocodiles. It is also a popular time for tourists to visit the Serengeti, as they can witness this incredible natural spectacle up close.

NGORONGORO CRATER | AT THE HOTEL

Ngorongoro is a special place, and the first time you descend onto the crater floor is like no other safari experience in Africa. This is a world unto itself, one where you’ll encounter the crater’s 600-strong population of hyenas, as well as critically endangered black rhinos. You’ll also find elephants with larger-than-average tusks and more than 50 lions living in the crater.
But the sheer beauty of Ngorongoro will most likely live longest in your memory. From early morning, mist rises from the crater, revealing steep, forested walls, sheltered waterways where hippos wallow, and a world of abundant wildlife hidden away from the rest of the world. Choose comfortable, practical, and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. Lightweight, breathable clothing such as cotton or linen shirts, pants, and shorts. Long-sleeved shirts and pants can also help protect you from the sun, insects, and thorny bushes. Neutral-colored clothing such as khaki, beige, or olive green. Avoid bright colors or patterns, as they can scare off wildlife or attract insects.

What is the tipping etiquette for safari guides and mountain crews on trips like this?

Tipping is highly appreciated at the end of safari/mountain climb. The size of tips will vary depending on the length and complexity of the trip, the number of staff on the trip and the number of clients on the trip. Generally, groups like to meet together before the end of the trek to discuss how much they would like to tip each staff member based on their individual trek experience. You should prepare an envelope after your trek for your tip money at the Hotel. You can use US dollars, Euros, TZ Shillings or a combination of these. Please ask the Safari/Climbing coordinator at the Hotel for advice.

Mountain Climbs: $25-50 USD per Day per Climber to be shared between guides, chefs and porters.

Safaris: Driver/Guide: $35-50 USD per Day per Car. If it is a camping safari there will be a tip for the cook $10 USD per Day.
